  • Just like anything worth your time, being in the Maples Band Program takes effort. However, we have a spot for ALL students, regardless of your current musical level.

Our biggest wish is for all students to consistently improve as musicians and enjoy the learning process. Every aspect of our program is designed to foster and encourage musical and personal maturity.

  • The Maples Band program has a wide variety of concert and jazz bands. Through audition or sign-up, students are able to join several different bands during their high school career. Some bands have merchandise that students can order through the band program once they are accepted into the group.

Below you will find a list of bands that offer purchasable merchandise:

    • Wear dress pants instead of jeans

    • Wear dress shoes instead of sneakers

    • Wear black socks instead of white/coloured socks

    • Wear formal black clothing instead of branded black clothing

Grade 11 and 12 students may wear any formal black attire of their choosing.

Grade 9 and 10 band students must wear a Maplesmusic shirt (provided by the school) as their top. Bottoms are up to the student’s discretion.

NOTE: Dresses and skirts are to have no plunging collars or spaghetti straps. They must also be long skirts complete with black stockings.

  • YES!

In fact, most students are involved in sports or other activities around the school. We encourage you to participate in a variety of different experiences. No matter what activities you pursue, you must keep an accurate schedule and iron out any conflicts that may arise.  It is up to you to keep your schedule straight, for the good of the band and for the good of your other activities. With a little give and take, most things work out just fine.

  • We think being in both band and choir is a great idea.

You will learn more about music and become a more well-rounded musician when you're in both classes.

We have worked together with the choir teachers and the administration to ensure that band and choir classes will never conflict with each other.

  • All kinds! We study classical music, folk music, wind band literature, jazz standards, funk and latin, pop charts and much more.

Band directors spend lots of quality time researching and looking for music that you will learn from, love playing, and expand your musical horizons. If you have suggestions for a piece of music to play, please let the appropriate band director know!

  • Every year the Grade 10 band goes to Camp Assiniboia for a fun-filled day of learning our music, working with professional clinicians, getting to know each other, and playing many games. Oh, and the food is fantastic, too!

In Grade 11 or 12 (every second year) there is a BIG TRIP somewhere in the world. The past few years Maples has gone to Banff and Edmonton. Old trips have also included Chicago and Toronto!

All these trips have a trip fee and health form attached. More details about prices and forms are provided by the band teachers during classes via class discussion and posts on Google Classroom. Annual emails and letters are also sent out to each family.

For larger, more expensive trips, every student from grade 9-12 has the opportunity to fundraise. For more information, please visit the FUNDRAISER page under INFO.
