Band Student Testimonies

My name is Ashley and I’ve been involved in the band program at Maples since I was in grade 9. Being in band, you not only meet new people, but you get to go on trips, showcase the music you’ve worked so hard on, expand your musical horizon, and be part of the well-known program at maples which is music. Maples Colligate is known for all the musical talent that walks in and out every year. With the help of Mrs. Loganberg, Zimmy, and Ms. P, band class is something everyone looks forward too. Band class happens every second day and is always a very positive place.

Joining band will be one of the most fulfilling things you ever do in high school. For me, I always looked forward to band; it was one of my favourite subjects. Anytime I’m not feeling good, or I’m having a bad day, you know what makes me feel better? Music. It’s honestly one of the most powerful things in the world, it’ll change lives, and it could change yours.

The band program has taught me so much. It has taught me how important teamwork is, and how without everyone’s co-operation and dedication, then we won’t be able to reach our full potential. Within a band, we are not strangers reading music for an easy grade, we are a great big family who play as 1 band in order to make 1 sound; a sound that portrays our passion for music and the strength of our bonds. These are the bonds that tie us together both in and out of band practice.

Band is one of the most rewarding programs you can join in high school. Band is like an investment, it gets more rewarding the longer you're in it. The first and second years are pretty basic, you learn to scales, songs, and practice methods more advanced than the previous year. Later those years, you'll go to the Optimist Festival, where you get adjudicated and taught some profound band things by profound band people. The third year is when things really start paying off. At this point you'll be learning more advanced and intricate songs to prepare you for the grand finale of the band program which is the Rocky Mountain Music Festival. The Rocky Mountain Music Festival is a 6 day senior music trip to Banff, where you'll hear groups from all across the country perform, and also where you yourself will perform. To top it all off, you will learn valuable lessons about teamwork and solidarity, meeting and learning to like people you wouldn't expect to like and growing as a well rounded human being.

The band program and Band teachers are like no other teachers anywhere. The band program is just not all about learning music, it’s about learning a new language, learning how to work with others and it teaches one how to connect deeply with what you are doing.
